Urgent Message to Cal Poly Students and the Cal Poly Community:

We regret that this first message of the academic year to students has to be a caution about safe and responsible conduct, but it has come to the University’s attention that San Luis Obispo emergency rooms have seen a spike in serious, alcohol-related admittances over the past week among college-age young adults.

In addition, last night a large police presence was required just off campus to deal with dangerous crowd situations and out-of-control parties.

We urgently request that all Cal Poly students make wise and responsible choices regarding the activities you attend and those you host.

Please be aware that:
• Starting today, police are stepping up patrolling on campus and in the neighborhoods adjacent to campus, including DUI checkpoints, to help preserve public order and safety.
• Campus policies related to student conduct and local, state and federal laws will be strictly applied and enforced. Do not place your academic or future career success in jeopardy. Violation of campus policies or criminal laws regarding alcohol may result in severe academic sanctions or a permanent criminal record.
• Please note that a social host ordinance is in place in the City of San Luis Obispo that includes severe sanctions, as follows:
If you host a party or gathering, you are responsible for making sure no one under the age of 21 possesses or consumes alcohol (SLO Social Host Ordinance — Municipal Code Section 9.05.010).
If anyone under 21 is drinking at your party, you will be held criminally liable. A violation is a misdemeanor and convictions go on your criminal record. (1st offense: $350; 2nd offense: $700 within 12 months; 3rd offense: $1,000 within 12 months. Additional court costs will be added to all fines.)

Here are some tips to help you comply with the law:
1. Keep your social gatherings small and in control.
1. Do not violate the noise ordinance or disturb your neighbors. 2. Control who attends your party Know who is there and how old they are. 3. Do not let people off the street come into your party. 4. Check IDs if necessary. 5. If things get out of control, call the Police Department for help before someone else complains.
Thank you for your careful attention to this message. Please share it with classmates, friends and neighbors.
With best wishes for a safe and productive new academic year.

MESSAGE FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS
December 2008 - Recent deaths of Cal Poly students

Dear Parents,

You may have heard that the Cal Poly community is mourning the recent loss of three very fine students, a tragedy that hits especially hard this time of year. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of Favian Mora, an electrical engineering major, Carson Starkey, an architectural engineering freshman, and Frances Chang, a business student. We consider Cal Poly to be a close-knit family, and we hold dear the trust that you place in us to watch over and care for your students.

As some of you might already know, alcohol may have been a factor in the death of Carson Starkey, who was at an off-campus fraternity party when he passed away. During the winter break, we ask you to partner with us in our efforts to educate and remind students about the risks involved with the consumption of alcohol.

Many Cal Poly students – particularly our young adults away from home for the first time - are learning to make decisions on their own. They are faced with new social situations, peer pressure and the desire to fit in. Some will choose to drink.  We know that the support and advice of parents and families is important to our students; so, we ask that you consider taking a moment to remind your son or daughter that as adults, they have an important responsibility for the safety of themselves and their friends.  Remind them to watch out for one another and to seek help immediately if a fellow student appears to be in need – even if there are consequences involved in doing so.

These reminders are helpful to us as we to attempt to instill in our students the confidence to stand by their choices, to respect the choices of others who may choose not to drink or to do so in moderation and to be safe.

Cal Poly President Warren J. Baker recently wrote a message to all students about this heartbreaking tragedy.  It includes the reminders I’ve mentioned as campus resources for students in need. Please take a moment to

Cornel Morton
